Abrasive Manufacturers
May 6th, 2009 Filed under: Uncategorized — Advertising AuthorAbrasives are manufactured in many different forms. There are also different types of abrasives. They are coated abrasives and bonded abrasives. Abrasive manufacturers produce these different abrasives as they all have very different purposes.
The most common abrasive you will know is likely to be sand paper. This is a coated abrasive.
Coated Abrasives
Coated abrasives are the types of abrasives that will be used by everyday people not just found in industries, sandpaper is the most common type. A coated abrasive consists of a material, usually paper but can be cloth, metal or rubber. The material is the coated with an adhesive, the adhesive acts as a bonding agent. A mineral is the applied to the surface that the adhesive has been applied, the adhesive sets and the mineral forms a rough grit like edge in turn creating the sanding paper. The edge of a matchbox is a good example of a coated abrasive, they are often manufactured in a specific shape so they can be used to wrap around blocks, hands and even rotary and orbital sanders.
Bonded Abrasives
Abrasive manufacturers also produce bonded abrasives, a boded abrasive is solid material. It is not coated with an adhesive and does not have mineral applied to it. Aluminium oxide is the most common bonded abrasive. Bonded abrasives often have both sides that can be used for finishing; these sides are also rarely the same. Different grades are on both sides, so different effects can be achieved. A very good example of a bonded abrasive is a sharpening stone.
