Political Sign of the Times

As Congress’s Christmas recess approaches and the White House and House of Representatives finish up the last of their business for the year, the Senate may be working through the holiday to get the health care bill finished. Although many on both sides of the aisle are praying the Senate comes to an agreement on health reform, the more political minds in Washington hope their party leaders get a little bit of rest this holiday. Because once 2009 is over, the fight for November begins.
In all, the November 2010 midterm elections will determine 51 political positions. 6 Republicans and 3 Democrats in the Senate, 12 Republicans and 10 Democrats in the House and 10 Republicans and 10 Democrats in Governor’s races will all be decided on one day. With the republicans still stinging from the monumental success of the Obama campaign, many expect advertising to play a massive role in who wins in November.
Yes, the country is fiercely divided and with media hyperbole and divisive issues bubbling over in protests and town hall meetings, experts expect to see more voter turnout this year than in prior midterm elections. But that is precisely the reason advertising will become so important.
Barack Obama was able to overcome his lack of experience on major policy issues by being a charismatic and inspiring leader and because he was able to capture the youth vote in overwhelming numbers. This youth vote saw things like his unique web presence and viral marketing efforts like the now-famous Obama logo and Graffiti-style “HOPE” poster that connected with urban teens and young adults.
Soon, political signage will be on every front lawn across the U.S. with people rallying their support behind the candidate of their choice. But how will these political yard signs cut through the clutter? There was a time when only presidential candidates had bumper stickers but that time may be over. Posters, signs, placards, and buttons can’t just come with a name and a slogan anymore. These marketing efforts have to be effectively branded so they mean something to the people who see them.
A great yard sign is a start. Yard signs are recognizable parts of any local campaign but they all generally look the same. A strong design that does something different will make a candidate stand out. Other promotional materials will follow but a strong yard sign is a great place to start any campaign off on the right foot.
Hopefully, both sides will be rested and ready for the strong fight ahead. It’s going to be brutal. But the most compelling ad may not come with a frightening voice over or scrolling newspaper headlines. It may come from car magnets, simple buttons or even a run-of-the-mill political yard sign.
